Flyer for interview participants
Dear All,
An Identity of the Chinese Diaspora in California
The question of the Chinese American Identity is one that has been frequently debated; do the Chinese who have migrated here from Mainland China feel more Chinese American or American Chinese? Funded by the University of Warwick, Lord Rootes Memorial Fund, we are investigating the nature and transformation of the Chinese American Identity around the Bay Area, covering cities such as San Francisco, Palo Alto, San Jose and Berkeley. Your participation in this research project will contribute to a better understanding of the Chinese American Diaspora for students and research scholars alike. It may also give you some food for thought in thinking about what it actually means to be a Chinese living in America.
Who are we looking out for?
We are seeking Mainland Chinese participants (including Hong Kong) both from the 1st generation and subsequent generations who are willing to be interviewed on a purely voluntary basis. We welcome all Mainland Chinese participants from various age groups and all walks of life.
• 1st generation immigrants: those who are born in China and have migrated to America
• Subsequent Generations (2nd, 3rd, etc): those whose ancestors come from China and who have been born and brought up in America.
How will the interviews be conducted?
• The interviews will be conducted in a very casual and conversational manner and participants are free to choose where they would like to be interviewed (office, home, in a café, in San Francisco Chinatown)
• However, we would very much appreciate it if we could pay a visit to the participant’s home, as we would also like to identify the kind of objects used around the household. For example, whether most of the things used at home have a more western or Chinese influence. (cutlery, furniture, childrens’ toys etc.)
• Each interview will be approximately 1½ hrs.
• Interviews will be conducted either in English or Mandarin, whichever the participants feels comfortable with.
What should we expect during the interview?
• Questions asked can range from economic, social, political or cultural. Some examples of questions that will be asked:
- What is the significance of Chinatown and to what extent does is it representative of the Chinese culture and traditions? Are you proud of it?
- Do you celebrate traditional Chinese festivals?
- What does it mean to be ‘an American’?
- Do you think Globalization is a phenomenon that has allowed the typical Chinese American to integrate better in the American society?
• Although we have a list of questions to ask, participants are more than welcomed to contribute their experiences as Chinese living in America and how they feel about their society.
Will interviews be recorded and will participant’s names and records be published?
As we respect the privacy of our participants, participants will have a choice as to whether he/she agrees to have the interview recorded and their names and records be published.
However, allowing us to record and publish the interviews and the participant’s particulars (name, age group and occupation) will give us a more holistic picture of the Chinese Diaspora in America and may help future research scholars follow-up and further our project.
Where will the findings of the project be published? How will it contribute to the pool of Chinese American literature?
The findings of the project will be published in the archives of the Lord Rootes Memorial Fund. (Visit: www2.warwick.ac.uk/insite/info/learningteaching/rootes), and will be used for the purpose of research by future scholars in the field of Chinese American Diaspora.
Feel free to drop us an email, we’ll be happy to answer you any queries with regards to this project!
